Cijene i dalje rastu, a potrošači i dalje troše: Morning Brief
Jutrošnje izvješće o inflaciji moglo bi pokazati da je inflacija ubrzana prošlog mjeseca, ali ekonomisti očekuju da će to biti iznimka ove godine.
Čak i uz razgovore o inflaciji koji dominiraju i grupnim razgovorima ekonomista za američkim stolovima, čini se da se potrošačka potrošnja drži iznenađujuće dobro.
Januarska potrošnja kreditnih i debitnih kartica ubrzala se u januaru u usporedbi s decembrom, prema novim podacima Instituta Bank of America. Potrošnja po kućanstvu porasla je 5,1% u odnosu na prethodnu godinu, ubrzavši se u odnosu na povećanje od 2,2% u decembru i pokazujući posebnu snagu u područjima kao što su putovanja i restorani vani.
Ekonomisti s instituta BofA istaknuli su četiri razloga za povećanje potrošnje u januaru:

Na snagu je stupilo povećanje federalnih naknada za socijalno osiguranje od 8,7%.
Rast broja radnih mjesta bio je snažan, s dodanih 517.000 radnih mjesta
Nalazi su potvrđeni i od strane Mastercarda, čija je anketa SpendingPulse zabilježila skok od 8,8% u maloprodaji ex-auto u siječnju. To uključuje porast od 24,2% u računima restorana.
Potreba potrošača za izlaskom također se odražava u nedavnoj anketi Williama Blaira, koja je pokazala da gotovo 35% ispitanika troši isto na zabavu izvan kuće kao i prije pandemije. A 30,2% troši nešto ili puno više, vjerojatno kombinacija viših cijena i nadoknade izgubljenog vremena.
Ova bi izvješća mogla potvrditi prethodni podaci o prodaji na malo, koji bi trebali biti objavljeni u srijedu ujutro. Ekonomisti očekuju da će potrošnja bivših automobila i benzina porasti za 0,9% u siječnju, oporavivši se od pada u prosincu.
Naravno, jaka potrošačka potrošnja je mač sa dvije oštrice.
S jedne strane, to pokazuje da Amerikanci imaju dovoljno gotovine (i kredita) da se nose s višim cijenama. Tržište rada dovoljno je zdravo – unatoč velikim otpuštanjima – da podržava potrošnju. To istraživanje Williama Blaira pokazalo je da je 83% ispitanika izjavilo da je njihov prihod viši ili isti u usporedbi s godinom ranije, u usporedbi sa 79% ispitanika u srpnju 2022.
S druge strane, ako potražnja ostane visoka, Federalne rezerve će možda morati više raditi, tj. više podići stope, kako bi se suprotstavile tom inflatornom pritisku.
“Izazov je u tome što kada razmišljate o mandatu Feda, to je stabilnost cijena, koja ide ruku pod ruku s nezaposlenošću”, rekla je Michelle Meyer, glavna američka ekonomistica u Mastercardu, za Yahoo Finance Live.
“Nezaposlenost je upravo dosegnula 53-godišnju najnižu razinu u posljednjem izvješću, tako da žele ukloniti nešto od tog viška na tržištu rada, doći do održivijeg, zdravijeg tempa za otvaranje radnih mjesta. I žele da potrošači troše – ali po stopi koja je više u skladu sa stabilnim i zdravim gospodarstvom.”
